This class is designed for potters wanting to understand the basic theory of glaze chemistry as well as starting their journey in the wonderful world of glaze formulation and testing. 

Students will learn about glaze composition using the Periodic Table of Elements, the Stull Chart and Unity Molecular Formula (UMF). They will also learn about raw materials and what they bring to a glaze formula, formulating glaze recipes, preparing glaze tests, testing strategies, reviewing results and adapting.

This will allow students to formulate new glaze recipes, adjust existing recipes for their material needs.

Included

  • Five 2-hour theory lectures held virtually on Teams
  • One one-on-one session with the instructor to review the first glaze test formulation
  • Five one-on-one sessions with the instructor to review glaze results
  • Firing of test tiles at cone 6 in a regular glaze firing cycle

Not Included
Participants must must obtain the equipment and dry materials listed below and are expected to prepare their glaze test at home:

  • One respirator with P100 cartridges (~ $60 from the hardware store), 
  • One 100 mesh test sieve (~$22 from a pottery supplier),
  • One  0.001g jewelry digital scale (~$20-$30 online)
  • Ten small containers to hold test recipes (~$20 from a local store)
  • Raw glaze materials. Depending on materials selected, the estimated glaze materials costs to range between $100-$150.

Cancellation / Refund Policy
If cancellation notification is received via email at least 7 calendar days prior to the start of the class, we will issue a $275 refund. Registration fees are not refundable past this timeline. We will not offer a spot in future classes, gift certificate or any other compensation.

Missing Classes
There will be no opportunity to make up missed lectures. Students will receive copies of class slides but each class is running once.
