Pottery Instructor (Part-Time)
We are seeking one or two enthusiastic and dedicated Pottery Instructor(s) to join our Studio.
Bumpy Roads Studio is a young and thriving pottery studio located in downtown Pembroke. We have developed a successful recipe to guide
students on pottery making processes and skills with a strong focus on creating a non-judgmental environment conducive to fun and learning. The Pottery Instructor(s) will play an important part in the design and delivery of our programming.

Studio Programming
Classes
- Core 10-week pottery class: This class is designed for beginners where students learn all the basic skills of pottery-making, ranging from hand-building, throwing at the pottery wheel, trimming, core decorative techniques, and glazing. This program is offered three times per year in Winter, Spring, and Fall. There are 6 classes per week and 6-8 students per class.
- Core 5-week hand-building class: This class is designed for beginners where students learn basic and more advanced hand-building skills using coils, slabs, pinching. There is one class per week with 6-8 students. This class program is offered 2-3 times per year.
Clay Nights
We offer 24-35 Clay Nights per year, usually on Monday evenings.
- Hand-Building Clay Nights are short workshops of one or two evenings where participants are lead through making a specific project. Number of participants: 10
- Pottery Wheel Clay Nights are two evening workshops where participants try their hand at the pottery wheel and experience throwing, trimming and have the opportunity to use underglaze to decorate their creations. Number of participants: 10.
- Parent / Child Clay Nights are one evening workshops where parent/child duos come to the studio to create a specific project. These Clay Nights are 2-hours in length and usually scheduled on Saturday in the early evening. Number of participants: 12 (6 parents, 6 children)
Summer Programming
During the Summer months, July and August, the Studio offers daytime workshops to adults and teenagers.
- Clay Days for Adults are short workshops of one or two half-days where participants are lead through making a specific project. Number of participants: 8
- Clay Camp for Teens are five half-days where a group of teenagers aged 13-17 come to the studio to experience pottery-making skills: throwing at the wheel, trimming, hand-building and decorating. Number of participants: 8.
Private Events
- Onsite Private Events are 3-hr workshops where participants are lead through making a specific project using hand-building techniques. We usually offer 10-15 private events per year. Number of participants: 6-10.
- Offsite Private Events are 3-hr workshops where participants are lead through making a specific project using hand-building techniques. This is a new offering and we're anticipating offering this service 4-10 times per year. Number of participants: 10-25.
Duties & Responsibilities
Program Delivery
- Lead classes part of our signature 10-week beginner’s program.
- Lead classes part of a 5-week hand-building program
- Provide a safe, inclusive and judgment-free environment for all
- Provide accurate, timely and practical feedback to students
- Deliver onsite and offsite private events
Programming Development
- Collaborate in the development, scheduling and delivery of Clay Nights
- Collaborate in the development, scheduling and delivery of special Summer Programming
Other Duties
- Perform general studio maintenance tasks and clean-up after classes and events
- Follow studio guidelines and policies
Required Skills
Making Skills
- Advanced skills at the pottery wheel and hand-building (5+ year of experience as maker)
- Sound knowledge and experience of various decorative techniques (use of underglaze, carving, sgraffito, Mishima, water abrasion, slip, etc.)
Instruction Skills
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Ability to provide constructive feedback and/or positive reframing
- Prior experience at teaching pottery an asset
Studio Health & Safety
- Working knowledge of a pottery studio's health and safety practices
- ability to move and handle 50 lbs boxes of clay
Other Requirements
- Willingness to teach to a variety of audiences: adults (year-round), parent-child duos (a few times per year, and teenagers (summer).
- Willingness to have a workload that can vary with the seasons
- Ability to drive to offsite event locations
Compensation & Other Details
Hours and Scheduling
Part-time, 12-24 hours per week depending on seasons (includes evenings and some weekends)
Compensation
- Salary: $21- $23 per hour + up to $1000 per year for workshop development & testing
- Signing bonus of $300

- 15% discount on clay/firing fee for personal projects.
